Alderman Knight Action Group (AKAG) has been formed principally by friends and parents of Alderman Knight School to oppose plans to close this very special school.

Gloucestershire County Council plans to close all MLD (Moderate Learning Difficulties) special schools and 25% of the EBD (Emotional & Behavioural Difficulties) special schools, under the guise of increasing inclusion for SEN (Special Educational Needs) children.

Gloucestershire County Council are about to embark on the final round of consultation. Originally they proposed five options, a sixth was added by the school. These have been cut down to two – option 2 closure and option 6 Alderman Knight School continuing as a special school with the addition of providing outreach to mainstream schools in North Gloucestershire.

Alderman Knight continues as a school in its present form.

Alderman Knight ceases to be maintained as a special school.

Becomes a secondary special school for children with a wide range of complex needs.

Becomes a specailist centre connected to a mainstream school with an outreach service to support other local mainstream schools.

Remains as a special school but change of character to become a school for children and young people with complex difficulties.

Continues as a special school with the addition of providing outreach to mainstream schools in North Gloucestershire.

From surveys that we have conducted the vast majority of people interviewed support option six. With this in mind we are demanding that option 6 be taken forward to support all children with moderate and complex learning difficulties in North Gloucestershire.

Update:

All petition signatures were handed in to the Scrutineer and Executive Director of Education at Shire Hall on 31st December 2003. A decision on these options will then be taken by the County Council Cabinet at Shire Hall at a public meeting on Wednesday 4th February 2004.
